Running at 10,000 Feet August 18, 2009

haleakala_23Haleakala National Park is a 2-mile tall volcano right in the middle of Maui, Hawaii. Like pretty much all other national parks, it has a variety of hiking trails that go in and around the caldera of the volcano and numerous other craters. At 10,000 feet the air is extremely thin and even simple tasks are suddenly a great deal harder to do. Even hiking downhill at an easy pace is enough to leave you gasping for breath after a few miles at that altitude.

So when I got the chance to visit the summit of Haleakala, the only logical thing for me to do was to run. Uphill.
