Is Summer Break Too Long? June 29, 2009

summer-sun-poster-c10277796For every school year, there’s a summer break. A really, really long summer break.

Every school year, students get back to school, review everything they learned the previous year for the first week or three, and then start learning new material. And then of course, is the usual panic in the first month or so that you’ve forgotten everything that you’ve ever learned. Without all that wasted time and effort, wouldn’t school be a lot more productive?

‘What’s wrong with this kid?!?!’

Regular followers of this blog (if you exist at all…) may have noticed that I haven’t posted anything or replied to comments in the past week, and may be wondering why I haven’t been doing anything lately.

Well, the answer is, quite a lot. This past week I’ve been away at a band camp at McDaniel College without internet access, so it wasn’t really possible to post anything up here. I can’t access the internet from my phone so I was kind of cut off from the outside world. Hell, it wasn’t until half the world knew about Michael Jackson’s death that I heard about it.

I think the scariest part of checking Facebook when I came back was seeing this:

holyshit2I wasn’t really that behind on anything else… a few extra followers on Twitter (even though I hadn’t updated in a week!) and a handful of comments here and that’s all, but I had a hella lotta stuff on Facebook to get to when I came back.

And about comments, I’ll get to them as soon as I have time, but it seems so far that there has been some clash and discussion in the comments without my help, which is always nice.

Anyways, that will wrap this up for today… I’ll see if I can come up with a post tomorrow or possibly later this week.

Cheers,

Jacky

adhd-18223People that “have ADHD” get on my nerves.

I’m not talking about the people who legitimately have a problem with the disorder, just about the people who use it as an excuse to act like assholes or just to piss people off in general. The disorder exists and I’m aware that it can be very serious in some cases, but the bar has been lowered so far for ADHD that people now just use them as an excuse to not deal with their problems and rely on medication or sympathy. Unless someone has a very legitimate problem with ADHD, there’s no reason they should be taking medication or acting abnormally because all they need to do is exercise some degree of self-control.

arts-music-graphicIt’s not the artists. It’s the record companies.

I can’t believe that I never thought of this before. The reason mainstream music is so horrible and never-changing today is because the record companies are unwilling to sign artists with new ideas. After reading Steve Albini’s article on bands and record companies, it hit me just how profitable for these record companies it is to keep signing mediocre bands that somehow sell a bunch of records. They don’t care about the music; all they care about is the balance sheet at the end of the day.

To level the playing ground, maybe what we need is a revolution in the music industry. Screw record companies, if every band becomes an indie band, natural selection of music will occur and we’ll experience evolution for the better when all the worst bands (that always manage to sell the most records somehow) all go broke.

famous-people_smallIf I hear another word about a celebrity doing dumb stuff, I just might smash my TV.

I was watching E! last night (by a complete accident) and I realized exactly how much people have become addicted to celebrity narcissism. There is not a place in the entire world (excepting Antarctica perhaps) where one cannot receive the latest news about a celebrity breakup, hookup, baby, or just dumb shit in general. Do people ever get tired of hearing about these people, or have we as a society become so addicted to these public figures that we can’t get enough news?

CommunicationCommunication has changed drastically in the past decade.

A letter that could have taken weeks to send can now be sent and received nearly instantaneously with the advent of email. High-school friends that would have faded into your distant memories are now friends on Facebook that you can chat with any time you want. But at what cost has this new speed come at, and was it really worth it?

ReligiesI am not, and will never be, religious.

Religion is just not for me. I don’t have enough faith, I like science better, and religious nuts drive me absolutely crazy. When it comes to religion, I can’t believe any of the stuff that people try to cram down my throat because most of the time, it goes against everything I’ve learned. Maybe some of my anti-religiousness (if that makes any sense) stems from my innate hatred of evangelicals, or from my preference of logical explanations for events. Or maybe it’s a mix of the two.

Affirmative Action: ‘Anti-Racism’ Gone Too Far June 4, 2009

affirmative-action-protestAffirmative action is unnecessary.

In my opinion, affirmative action achieves the opposite goal that it should. The purpose of it is to promote equality, but by favoring people of a certain race or gender above others, doesn’t it further exactly what it was meant to prevent? Isn’t affirmative action just another form of cleverly disguised racism?

‘Uh-oh I think this guy’s a racist!’ (I’m not)

clock_screen0224 hours is not enough time in a day.

What if each day was 30 hours instead of 24 hours? Imagine all the stuff you can do in 6 hours, and then imagine how kickass it would be if you could fit all that stuff into a day without altering your normal routine. I could get 3 more hours of sleep before school and still have enough time in my day after running, homework, debate, and music (my normal schedule) to hit the gym for 2 hours. No more stress, no more sleep deprivation, no more rushing, and no more staying up late.

SGA: Not Important June 1, 2009

StudentGovernmentFlyerpic2Class elections were last Friday, and I couldn’t help but wonder why some people took them so seriously.

To me, holding a position on SGA seems kind of pointless. It’s always advertised as “teaching” you stuff, but I don’t get what it’s supposed to teach. The role of the people on the class council is more or less to organize prom and homecoming. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying it’s not important, just that I doubt it’s really such a big deal.
