Overweight? Do Something About It! December 28, 2009

Why is America fat? Because people are lazy. Don’t believe me? Turn on the TV and count how many ads for quick weight-loss products are aired in an hour, and not just dietary supplements. People seem to think that losing weight requires no real effort and that they can shed pounds while watching TV. If this were true, there wouldn’t be any overweight people, but sadly, it’s not. If you’re overweight but actually doing something about it, great. But if you’re complaining (if you don’t have a problem about it, that’s cool) about being overweight and you’re not doing anything significant to solve the problem, then I have no respect for you.
Why Refuse the Shot? November 16, 2009

Recently there has been news about parents refusing to vaccinate their children out of the fear that the children will develop autism or other debilitating disorders. The rejected vaccinations range from just the normal flu vaccine to the measles or tetanus vaccines, or in some cases, every single vaccine ever. It’s outrageous that parents would place the lives of their own children and the many other children at risk and it’s possibly even more outrageous that doctors would agree to exempt children from vaccinations that are scientifically proven to work.
Est-ce Que 你 Sabes Multiple Languages? November 4, 2009

In the modern world it is difficult to find a person who does not have at least a basic understanding of English. Yet, one would be hard-pressed to find an American citizen who is fluent in a language other than English. Actually, skill in a single language is a pretty hard demand to meet nowadays. Sure, it doesn’t seem like a problem, but we’re starving our students of unique work and education opportunities and falling behind the rest of the world that does have a foreign-exchange program. It’s a pity considering all that we’d have to do is teach more languages earlier in school.
Pen or Pencil? September 5, 2009

“The pen is mightier than the sword.”
Where does this leave the choice writing instrument for various students, the pencil? For that matter, who has ever praised the pencil at all? Is this empirical proof that the pen is greater than the pencil, or is the greatness of the pencil so universally accepted that praise is redundant?
The question of pen or pencil has bugged me, and likely a few other students, for quite some time. There are multiple angles to examine this predicament by and ultimately it probably just comes down to personal preference, but I am determined to throw in my 2 cents.
“The pencil is mightier than the sword…” that just sounds silly doesn’t it?
Running at 10,000 Feet August 18, 2009

Haleakala National Park is a 2-mile tall volcano right in the middle of Maui, Hawaii. Like pretty much all other national parks, it has a variety of hiking trails that go in and around the caldera of the volcano and numerous other craters. At 10,000 feet the air is extremely thin and even simple tasks are suddenly a great deal harder to do. Even hiking downhill at an easy pace is enough to leave you gasping for breath after a few miles at that altitude.
So when I got the chance to visit the summit of Haleakala, the only logical thing for me to do was to run. Uphill.

…and leaving nothing behind as proof.
If an alien commander was tasked with wiping out the human race to clear room on Earth, how would he/she/it do it? What would be the mechanism used for accomplishing this grotesque task, and how effective would it be? Would it point to whoever did it, or would it not leave a single thing behind? Incriminating evidence would not be a good thing to leave behind (some of those silly citizens might get mad), so choices would obviously be limited.
Internet Advertising: Is It a Good Deal? July 5, 2009

Internet advertising has grown into a big industry. A $45 billion big industry.
The industry may be enormous now, but it should leave doubts behind. Is the standard approach to advertising on the internet sustainable, and is it even a good deal? A large problem is that on the internet, standard banner ads simply don’t work. They don’t attract customers, they’re nothing more than blemishes on a computer screen, and the majority of the time, nobody cares about them. It just may be time for the industry to rethink its strategy.
“The only thing that matters is having fun.”
DTW is just about the most excessive airport that I’ve ever been to.

Believe it or not, those are actual comments that I have copied from YouTube videos. To those unfamiliar with the ways of the internet, those words may seem rather harsh. To those who consistently browse internet forums and sites like YouTube, they may seem rather tame. Those who have become familiar with those sites may actually have become immune to such comments and if you’re anything like me, you’ll subconsciously ignore them completely.
Sometimes it just seems that nobody on the internet is capable of writing something nice. It’s the Wild West up here: it’s lawless, popular, and strangely attractive. There’s a whole new set of rules here, but why exactly should there be?
